Ghana, Egypt discuss defence, trade, housing and major infrastructure projects

Ghana and Egypt are exploring new ways to strengthen cooperation in defence, medicine, trade, housing and major infrastructure projects. President John Dramani Mahama and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi discussed these areas during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 8th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit and the first Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt. The two leaders agreed to strengthen the long-standing relationship between Ghana and Egypt and increase cooperation in areas that could benefit both countries. President Mahama thanked Egypt for supporting Ghana’s resolution on reparations at the United Nations. He also asked Egypt to continue supporting Ghana as discussions on the issue progress at the international level. The two presidents explored ways to make it easier for businesses in Ghana and Egypt to trade and invest in each other’s countries. This could help attract investment and improve access to medicines. Defence and security were also discussed. President Mahama said Ghana wants to strengthen security cooperation with Egypt, particularly in intelligence sharing, training and the fight against terrorism. He said Ghana could also learn from Egypt’s experience and developed defence industry as the country works to improve its security capabilities. The two leaders also discussed the Sahel-Gulf of Guinea Accord and opportunities for cooperation in providing affordable housing.
