'She wanted to drink DDT' - Mother details how a 27-year-old kidney failure patient attempted suicide

Twenty-seven-year-old Gifty has caused a stir online after detailing the pain and trauma she has endured while battling kidney failure.
In an interview with Zionfelix, shared on Instagram and sighted by GhanaWeb on October 5, 2026, Gifty detailed how her health nightmare began during her early days at the university.
According to the 27-year-old, her ordeal started when she was diagnosed with high blood pressure at Level 100 at AAMUSTED.
“At Level 100, I wasn’t feeling well, and when I went to the hospital, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. That was when I started taking medicine.

“I was in Kumasi working when my boss opened a branch here in Accra, so I was transferred to the Accra branch. It was during that time that I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with kidney failure,” Gifty said.
Gifty additionally shared that she has undergone several tests to determine what might have caused her high blood pressure. However, doctors have been unable to establish whether the condition may have damaged her kidneys.
“I have done several tests to know what caused the high blood pressure and if that was the cause of the kidney failure. When I explained it to the doctors, they made me aware that the BP might have caused the kidney failure. Life hasn’t been easy because we have spent a lot on medication and dialysis.”
The 27-year-old additionally shared that her left hand has become numb following several surgeries related to her dialysis treatment.
“My left hand is not working. They used to fix the machine around my neck when I went for dialysis, but after some time, they asked me to undergo surgery so it could be moved from my neck to my hand.
“The first surgery failed, and the second one also failed, so now my hand isn’t active. I think my veins were cut during the surgery. So my left hand is now numb,” Gifty added.
Gifty further shared that she sometimes becomes breathless during dialysis, adding that she needs about $50,000 for a kidney transplant.
“Sometimes if I go for dialysis, I go breathless. They sometimes give me oxygen for days before I can breathe. The doctors are now saying that before I can get better, I would need a kidney transplant. The kidney transplant can be done in Ghana. The doctors are requesting $50,000.”
While sharing her ordeal, Gifty’s mother also revealed that her daughter struggles to sleep at night and once attempted to take her own life due to the unbearable pain.
Her mother detailed that Gifty attempted to drink poison to end her life, adding that she has exhausted her capital on medication and treatment for her daughter.

“She can’t sleep. She will cough till morning. I need help because I suffered before taking her through the university, and now that she is done with school, see what she is going through.
"All my capital is gone because we have used everything for her medications. Recently, she attempted to drink DDT, and if I hadn’t caught her, she would have killed herself. She intentionally sent her younger siblings away, and when no one was around, she wanted to kill herself,” her mother stated.
