Saddick Adams alleges 'unholy alliance' between government, ministers and FA

Sports journalist Saddick Adams has alleged the existence of an “unholy alliance” between government, ministers and the Football Association (FA), claiming political interests often influence decisions within football administration.

According to him, some appointments and committees within the FA are not necessarily based on competence, but can be used to reward political allies with opportunities to travel and gain other benefits.

“There is an unholy alliance, a very filthy alliance between governments, ministers and the FA,” Saddick Adams said.

He explained that political considerations can sometimes influence the composition of committees, with ministers allegedly seeking to have their preferred individuals included.

“When the FA says, ‘We are appointing a technical team committee, and there will be seven, they will travel around the world,’ you are a constituency too. The executives will vote for you. So bring two people, let’s put them on board,” he said.

Saddick Adams argued that although such individuals may have little influence on the work of the committee, their inclusion could provide them with opportunities to travel with the team.

“They have no power really to do anything. But when we are travelling, they will be on board,” he added.

He further alleged that the arrangement could create a mutual political benefit, where individuals who receive such opportunities could later support the minister politically.

“The compromise is that even if we fail, the minister has two people who have travelled to Austria under his authority. So they go back and vote for him to come back to Parliament,” he said.

Saddick Adams maintained that such compromises undermine merit-based appointments, arguing that the focus shifts from finding competent people to rewarding individuals for political purposes.

“If you do this compromise, you are not looking for competent people. You are looking for people to enrich them for your own personal benefit,” he stated.
