‘Anti-corruption campaigners sometimes become targets’ - Togbe Afede XIV

Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has raised concerns about Ghana’s enforcement of anti-corruption laws, warning that individuals who attempt to fight the canker can become targets of those who benefit from corrupt practices.
Speaking at the 2026 Asogli Teza on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Togbe Afede acknowledged that corruption is a global problem but said Ghana’s major challenge lies in the failure to effectively enforce laws already in place.
He stressed that without strong enforcement, efforts to combat corruption would continue to face significant obstacles.
“But let me say that I agree that corruption is everywhere. Everywhere in the world there is corruption. The challenge we have in our country is that we have not been able to enforce the laws. The laws are there; they have not been enforced. And sadly, those who try to enforce them sometimes become targets of people who enjoy the benefits of corruption,” he indicated.
Togbe Afede XIV speaks on the cost of corruption to Ghana’s development
Togbe Afede called for greater support for institutions mandated to investigate and prosecute corruption, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Attorney-General and the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
He said the work of these institutions is crucial to Ghana’s future, while acknowledging the difficulty of gathering evidence needed to successfully prosecute corruption cases.
According to him, the fight against corruption requires the collective support of Ghanaians because its consequences affect everyone, irrespective of political affiliation or ethnic background.
He further warned that failure to tackle corruption could undermine the country’s development plans, turning well-designed projects and initiatives into ‘white elephants.’
