Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Akwasi Konadu, has criticised National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, over his comments on the arrest of the Manhyia South MP.
Konadu described the remarks as an indication of what he considers the abusive use of state power, arguing that no political actor should suggest that the state could be directed to arrest an individual and that security agencies would subsequently defend the action.
Speaking in an interview on ChannelOne TV, the Manhyia North MP said Gbande should be ashamed of such comments, particularly where they concern the use of state institutions against ordinary citizens.
“I believe that this statement by Honourable Gbande must bow down his head in shame. And I'm sorry to say that it is not right for anybody to be telling us that we directed the state institution to cause the arrest of an ordinary person for no cause and that the excesses when it comes will defend it,” he said.
Konadu said the comments should concern Ghanaians because citizens were watching how state power was being exercised, adding that such an approach would not intimidate the opposition from questioning government actions.

He maintained that the opposition would continue to hold the government accountable and defend individuals whose rights it believes had been violated.
“You must bear in mind that the ordinary Ghanaian is looking at them and people with this attitude will tell them that they would also stand their grounds and they will not let anybody intimidate them,” he said.
Konadu further cautioned against what he described as the abusive use of power, stressing that political power is temporary and should not be used to suppress legitimate criticism.
“Power is transient,” he said, insisting that the opposition would remain focused on demanding accountability from the government despite what he described as threats and intimidation.
