Fair Wages and Salaries Commission engages striking teachers over service conditions

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has engaged the leadership of the three pre-tertiary teacher unions in negotiations aimed at finalising their collective agreement and conditions of service.
The engagement, held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, forms part of government’s efforts to address outstanding concerns of the teachers following a joint strike action declared by the three unions, which officially commenced on Monday, September 28, 2026.
The meeting held on the premises of the FWSC was chaired by the Chief Executive of the commission, Dr George Smith-Graham.
Also present were the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah; the President of NAGRAT, Jacob Anaba and the President of PRETAG, King Awudu Ali and other leaders of the three unions.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the FWSC and the union leadership to discuss the outstanding issues and demands raised by the unions.
The three teacher unions are Ghana National Association of Teachers, (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Graduate (PRETAG).
Speaking after the meeting, the Chief Executive of the FWSC, Dr George Smith-Graham, said the meeting would be reconvened at a later date to allow the Commission to undertake further consultations on the demands presented by the unions.
He said further consultations were necessary to enable the commission to consider the issues raised by the unions and engage the relevant stakeholders before the negotiations resume.
Dr Smith-Graham commended the union leadership for a peaceful meeting.
The engagement follows an emergency meeting convened by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, with the leadership of the three teacher unions on Monday, September 28, 2026, following the commencement of their nationwide strike.
Speaking after the engagement, the Minister confirmed that the FWSC would spearhead the next phase of formal negotiations on behalf of the government.
“The FWSC will meet with the unions on Tuesday to continue detailed discussions on their collective agreement and conditions of service,” he said.
The engagement by the FWSC today is part of the formal process to address the outstanding issues concerning the collective agreement and conditions of service of the three pre-tertiary teacher unions.
Meanwhile, the government has appealed to the leadership of the unions to suspend the ongoing strike action to create a conducive atmosphere for constructive negotiations and facilitate efforts to resolve the outstanding issues.
