'I am ready to be sacked from the NPP' – Chairman Butey

Former Acting Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Smith Butey, has stated that he is prepared to be sacked from the party over his opposition to the recent amendments to the party’s constitution. According to him, he remains firm in his position against the amendments approved at the party’s recent National Delegates Conference, which, among other changes, sought to make the flagbearer the leader of the party instead of the National Chairman. Speaking in an interview, excerpts of which have been shared on social media, Butey was asked whether he was prepared to risk his position in the NPP by continuing to oppose the amendments. “I am ready to be sacked because I am fighting for the right people of the party, so I don’t care about anything that they do,” he stated. Butey further claimed that some members of the party’s leadership had secretly approached him to apologise over the matter. However, he maintained that he would continue to stand by his position and oppose the amendments. According to him, during the delegates’ conference, he did not initiate any amendment to make the party’s flagbearer its leader instead of the chairman, insisting that he rejected the amendment. “As a leader at the time, I nullified the amendment, and they can take it wherever they want. “Even they had to make us aware because we don’t know if they had added something to the motion or not… Also, I didn’t bring any amendment during the delegate conference, so I don’t have any idea about it,” he said. Chairman Butey additionally noted that he had filed a motion at the court challenging the amendment that sought to make the party’s flagbearer its leader. “I don’t want to talk about the court date, but it’s in my car, and you can come home, and I would show it to you,” he added. Meanwhile, the NPP, before its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, stated that it had approved 14 amendments to its constitution. According to the party, the decision to amend certain provisions of the constitution was aimed at strengthening its internal structures, leadership, administration and electoral preparedness. The party subsequently amended Articles 10(3), 10(3)(2) and 10(4)(2) to provide for the presidential candidate to lead the campaign structure. According to the new amendment, the presidential candidate, in consultation with the National Executive Committee, shall develop the campaign structure for the presidential election and appoint the chairperson and other members of the National Campaign Advisory Committee, subject to approval by the National Council.
