'Ghana must end 24-year Olympic football absence' - Richard Akpokavie

Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Richard Akpokavie has charged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to work towards securing qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Akpokavie says football must be among Ghana’s teams at the Games as the country seeks to end its 24-year absence from Olympic football.
Ghana’s last appearance in Olympic football came at the 2004 Athens Games, where the Black Meteors were eliminated at the group stage.
Speaking during a meeting with the GFA, Akpokavie said the GOC is ready to collaborate with the football association to ensure the team receives the necessary preparation and support ahead of the qualifiers.
“By all means, we have to qualify for football at the 2028 Olympics,”he stated.

He said it is important to understand Ghana’s qualification pathway and plans, while identifying areas where the GOC, government and corporate sector can provide support.
“We think that at all costs, football must be one of the teams that must be at the 2028 Olympics. The reason why it’s important that we meet is so that we understand your qualifiers and what you are going through and see how we can collaborate,” Akpokavie said.
He added that the collaboration should focus on ensuring the players are well prepared and adequately supported throughout the qualification campaign.
“We’re very happy to hear your path to qualification and then your plans so that we can also be involved in whatever you’re doing. Whatever we can do from our level to ensure that you get the optimal support, not only from government, but from the corporate world and from our own network as well, we will do that to ensure that you qualify,” he added.
Akpokavie stressed that Ghana’s prolonged absence from Olympic football is unacceptable given the sport’s popularity in the country.
“Football is our most popular sport in Ghana. So it’s not right that you should be missing from the Olympic Games for too long,” he said.
