GPL Sponsorship: Kofi Adams, Henry Asante disagree over who paid GH¢1m

The government and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are both claiming to have funded the GH¢1 million distributed to clubs ahead of the 2026/2027 season. The funds were meant to cushion the clubs in their preparations and help them manage their operations while mitigating their financial constraints. Questions have emerged concerning the source of the funding, with the public seeking clarity on whether it was provided by the government or the GFA in a bid to enhance the finances of the league. Appiah, Offei, Kingston: Potential local coaches for Black Stars job In September 2026, during an interview with Asempa FM, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum explained that the money came from the association. He stressed that the funds were mobilised by the company responsible for running the league and distributed to the clubs to support their operations, adding that claims of government support were untrue. "There is a company that is running the Premier League, called the Ghana Premier League Company Limited, so they supervise everything. When we go to a meeting and make a decision, they have to go and implement it, and we support. "The company is in Accra. If the FA pays the GH¢1 million, they give the cheque to us, then we pay the clubs. No [not the government or Sports Ministry]; it is the company. During the announcement, we made it clear that a company has been formed to take charge of the league, and Adesa handles production," Asante Twum said in Twi. However, in an interview with Max FM in October 2026, Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams rebuffed the claims, insisting that the government is sponsoring the league. Adams confirmed that government funding is currently supporting the Premier League and said the objective is to continue providing assistance until the clubs are able to stand on their own financially. "Government is sponsoring it (GPL) and intends to continue to sponsor up to a point that the clubs can be on their feet," Adams said. The Buem Member of Parliament added that the government's broader objective goes beyond the immediate financial support for the Premier League. "Government is interested in building our domestic clubs and leagues," he said. The contradictory remarks have sparked concerns about why the GFA and the government have differing positions, as the public demands transparency and accountability. Watch the videos below:
