Ghanaians roast government over 'mediocre' December in Ghana rollout

Ghanaians on social media have criticised the government over its rollout of activities for the December in Ghana festivities, describing some of the initiatives as poorly planned and questioning the names given to certain events. One of the events drawing criticism is “Black Star Christmas,” an initiative by the National Commission on Culture (NCC) aimed at giving Ghanaians and visitors a Christmas experience rooted in the country’s culture. The initiative forms part of the government’s activities for the December in Ghana festivities and seeks to promote Ghana’s cultural heritage to both local and international visitors. According to NCC Executive Director Wakefield Wisdom, the event is intended to ensure that visitors leave Ghana with more than memories of entertainment, food and drinks. He said the goal is to give them a deeper experience of indigenous Ghanaian culture. Detailing the activities planned for the event, Wisdom said one of the major attractions would be a dedicated children’s zone where kids could enjoy traditional Ghanaian games that are gradually becoming less familiar to younger generations. The games will include tug-of-war, pilolo, tumantu and ampe, among others. However, the announcement has not gone down well with some Ghanaians, who have taken to social media to question the government’s approach to promoting tourism and the creative arts industry. Christmas is going local! NCC unveils two-day cultural festival Some users have also questioned why the current administration did not build on the previous government’s “Year of Return” initiative instead of introducing a new concept. One netizen argued that Ghanaian politicians often abandon existing initiatives whenever there is a change of government. “Ghanaian politicians hate continuity. What happened to maintaining Year of Return??” one netizen asked. Another social media user accused the current administration of criticising the “Year of Return” initiative, only to introduce a new event under a different name that they believe falls below expectations. “You talk shi* about Year of Return only to unveil Black Star Christmas? These guys are so clueless,” another wrote. A third user argued that a change of government should not automatically lead to the replacement of every existing initiative. “Reason no. 532 why change of government doesn’t mean every single thing should change because they have clearly put this sector in the hands of poly nation,” another commented. Another netizen questioned whether some of the personalities currently involved in leading the creative arts sector had lived up to expectations. The user suggested that people might have assumed personalities such as Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, Abeiku Santana and KOD were the right choices to lead the sector, but the latest developments had raised doubts. “If the likes of Dzifa, Abeiku Santana, KOD and the rest had never been given opportunity to lead the creative industry, we would have thought the industry needed people like them. See where we are,” another user said.

KOD is a disappointment to the creative industry. Everyone thought he’d have done exceptionally well at his office. https://t.co/7yVAanDA9v

One thing I love about this administration is that all the loud mouthed ‘industry leaders’ have been exposed as nothing but braggarts. Maybe there was a time they knew what they were about. That time is definitely not now.
