Expand investigation into Zakaria Abdulai to other schools – Akosua Manu

Advisor on Gender and Social Protection to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Akosua Manu has called for investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai to be extended to other schools where he may have worked. Speaking on current affairs programme Newsfile on Accra based JoyNews on October 24, 2026, she said the investigation should not be limited to the allegations emerging from Obuasi SHTS alone but should also establish whether similar incidents may have occurred at other institutions. “There’s the need to look beyond Obuasi and establish whether there were similar concerns at the other schools where he worked. If there were complaints, investigators must find out what happened and whether the appropriate authorities acted,” she said. She stressed that limiting the probe to Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) could leave important questions unanswered about the handling of student safety concerns at his previous postings. She questioned the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) internal oversight mechanisms, particularly how complaints involving student safety were received, assessed and acted upon. She said the investigation must establish whether warning signs were ignored and whether officials responsible for safeguarding students failed to discharge their duties. Her call follows allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi SHTS, brought to public attention through investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni’s documentary, “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow”. This she stressed that protecting students and ensuring accountability must remain the priority, with all allegations thoroughly investigated and the rights of all parties respected.Source: www.ghanaweb.com
