'We do not pick and choose' – US responds to Ghanaian blogger's arrest by immigration

Ghanaian-born conservative Christian blogger Samuel Sey, a vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump's mass deportation policies, is reportedly set to be removed from the United States after being arrested by immigration authorities for allegedly overstaying his authorised period of stay. The development was disclosed by American journalist and author Megan Basham, who shared a statement attributed to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirming Sey's arrest and immigration status. According to the statement, officers of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Sey at Columbus International Airport in Ohio on October 21, 2026, after determining that he had violated US immigration laws. DHS stated that Sey entered the United States legally in 2022 but had overstayed his authorised period of admission. The department further indicated that he had no pending immigration applications and had accepted voluntary departure. "On October 21, ICE arrested Samuel Sey, an illegal alien from Ghana, at the Columbus International Airport. Sey entered the United States legally in 2022 but overstayed his length of admission by over four years, in violation of our nation's laws," the statement read. "Sey has no pending applications and accepted voluntary departure. He will remain in ICE custody until removed from the United States," it added. "We do not pick and choose which laws to enforce or where to enforce them," the statement said. DHS also encouraged undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the country through the CBP Home App, citing an offer of $3,000 and a free flight for eligible individuals who choose to self-deport. The department warned that individuals who fail to comply with immigration laws risk arrest and deportation, potentially affecting their ability to return to the United States legally. Background Samuel Sey, 39, was reportedly arrested and detained by US immigration authorities in Ohio on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. According to reports by The Roys Report and other US media outlets, he was booked into the Butler County Jail, north of Cincinnati, shortly after 3:30 p.m., with his detention status listed as "Hold for ICE." Jail records reportedly showed that he remained in custody as of Friday, October 23, although no criminal charges were listed in the publicly available booking information. His detention has attracted attention because of his outspoken support for President Trump's immigration crackdown, particularly his repeated defence of the deportation of undocumented immigrants. Unemployed man jailed 10 years for attempted robbery Born in Ghana, Sey relocated to Canada in the 1990s before moving to the United States in 2022 to marry a woman living in Ohio. He had previously disclosed that he did not possess permanent residency status in the United States and was not authorised to work in the country. Despite his immigration status, Sey continued to write and contribute to several conservative Christian and political platforms, including The Daily Wire, The Blaze, Christian Post and Turning Point USA. Over the years, he has gained recognition for his commentary on Christianity, race, immigration and American politics. In one of his articles defending Trump's deportation policies, Sey argued that the removal of undocumented immigrants was consistent with Christian teachings. "Christian ethics do not denounce deportations. They demand it," he wrote, insisting that immigration laws must be enforced. His reported detention and impending removal have drawn attention to the contrast between his public support for stricter immigration enforcement and his own encounter with the US immigration system.

I have received a statement from DHS regarding Sam Sey: “On October 21, ICE arrested Samuel Sey, an illegal alien from Ghana, at the Columbus International Airport. Sey entered the United States legally in 2022 but overstayed his length of admission by over four years, in violation of our nation’s laws. Sey has no pending applications and accepted voluntary departure. He will remain in ICE custody until removed from the United States. “We do not pick and choose which laws to enforce or where to enforce them. “We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $3,000 and a free flight to self-deport now. We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return.” - DHS SPOX As I get more information, I will update.
