'I am fully in support of anyone who will engage in galamsey' - NDC Fomena chairman

The newly elected Fomena Constituency Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, Ibrahim Atipilleh, has pledged his support for individuals engaged in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the constituency. According to him, illegal mining remains the primary source of livelihood for many residents in the area, making it necessary for him, as constituency chairman, to support those involved in the activity. Speaking to the media after his election during the recently concluded NDC constituency executive elections, Ibrahim Atipilleh also expressed his willingness to collaborate with his predecessor, Eric Opoku, to promote unity and development within the party. "I know that in Fomena, the only work we do here is galamsey, so I am standing firmly behind anybody who wants to engage in galamsey in this area. I will allow you to do it the right way, but if you are not doing it the right way, I won't allow you to do it," he stated. Meanwhile, the government continues to spend millions of cedis on efforts to combat illegal mining, which has caused extensive damage to water bodies and forest reserves across the country. As part of these efforts, the government has established several initiatives and task forces, including the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), to tackle the menace. NAIMOS has also been allocated funding to intensify its operations and work around the clock to curb illegal mining activities nationwide.
