Skyface SDW reveals why he abandoned his signature mask

Asakaa rapper Skyface SDW has revealed that he abandoned his signature mask in 2024 after concerns about impersonation, difficulties with international travel and a desire to establish a new public image. The rapper, whose real name is Kojo Jnr, said he initially wore the mask to conceal his identity, partly because he lacked the confidence to show his face and wanted to keep his music career hidden from some members of his family. Speaking in an interview on The Delay Show, Skyface explained that the mask became part of his identity, allowing him to move around freely without being recognised. “I started wearing the mask long ago. It was part of my identity,” he said. He explained that his decision to conceal his identity was also influenced by his relationship with his elder brothers, who did not know he was pursuing music. According to him, his mother and younger brother knew about his musical ambitions, but his elder brothers remained unaware of his involvement in the industry. Skyface said he eventually removed the mask in 2024 after feeling that he had built himself sufficiently as an artiste. However, he said the decision was not an easy one, as he had to begin building a public image without the anonymity the mask provided. He also cited cases in which people allegedly used masks to impersonate him and collect performance fees without appearing at events. “I would be there and someone would call to confront me about why I had taken half of a performance fee and failed to show up, even though I knew nothing about it,” he recounted. Unemployed man jailed 10 years for attempted robbery The rapper further disclosed that travelling for international engagements had sometimes been more difficult for him than for other members of the Asakaa Boys. He said he faced extensive questioning at embassies, while his colleagues appeared to complete their visa-related processes more quickly. Despite the challenges associated with revealing his face, Skyface said the response from fans had been encouraging. He noted that his visibility had created opportunities, particularly with advertisers who might previously have been reluctant to associate with an artiste whose face was concealed. “The reception has been massive because more doors have opened for me,” he said. Nevertheless, he admitted that adjusting to public recognition had been difficult because he had always preferred a quiet, private life. “With the mask, I'm Skyface, but when I take it off, I'm Kojo Jnr. Now I've lost that anonymity,” he said.
