President Mahama pushes skills-based education to prepare students for jobs

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving the quality of education in Ghana, stressing the need to strengthen technical and vocational training, scientific research and digital skills.

He said expanding access to education must be accompanied by efforts to ensure that students acquire practical skills and relevant knowledge to prepare them for the job market and their responsibilities as citizens.

President Mahama made the remarks in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday, October 27 2026, during a ceremony at which Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University) conferred an honorary doctorate on him.

The President highlighted several government interventions aimed at widening access to education and increasing enrolment, including the School Feeding Programme, the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme and the No-Fee Stress policy.

While acknowledging the contribution of these initiatives to making education more accessible, he emphasised that improving the quality and relevance of education must remain a key priority.

“We are committed to strengthening technical and vocational training, scientific research and digital skills. Expanding access must go hand in hand with improving quality and ensuring that what students learn equips them for the demands of work and citizenship,” he said.

President Mahama further called for a broader approach to university education, arguing that academic qualifications alone were not enough to prepare graduates for the challenges of the real world.

He stressed that universities must equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to enable them to contribute meaningfully to society and address practical challenges.

“A university qualification should give its holder the confidence to ask certain questions and the ability to solve real-world problems,” he added.
