The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, on behalf of the government and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has assured that the late Black Stars legend, Awuley Quaye Senior, will be honoured with a proper send-off.

The minister stated that the government will make every effort to ensure that the late captain of the senior national team is laid to rest with the honour he deserves.

"I will also, on behalf of His Excellency the President of the Republic, extend our condolences to the legend. In 1978, some of us were not even born, yet he had already made significant contributions to football.

"The least we can do for him is to provide a very befitting funeral, and I can assure you that the president, known as an ardent football enthusiast, is well-versed in history. It's important that we inform him. We will definitely communicate the information to him, and you can count on the ministry, the government, and the FA to provide whatever support is necessary to ensure that we honour our father, our legend, with a fitting funeral," the minister affirmed.

The minister provided this assurance when the family of the late footballer, accompanied by officials from the GFA, visited him at his office on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, to officially inform him of the legend's passing, extend an invitation to the ministry for the funeral, and seek the government's support for the arrangements.

Awuley Quaye Sr., widely recognized as the captain of the Black Stars team that secured Ghana’s third AFCON title in 1978, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024.

A legend of Great Olympics, he was the father of Abdullah Quaye, who played for the Qatar national team, and Lawrence Quaye, also known as Junior.

The delegation that visited the minister was led by GFA Executive Committee Member Oduro Sarfo and included members of Quaye's family, as well as sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah.
