Residents and travellers faced a traffic jam on the stretch following a heavy downpour
The Ghana Hydrological Authority has announced that the construction of storm drains to address chronic flooding on the Mallam-Kasoa Highway is expected to take 17 months.
Following a heavy downpour on May 13, 2024, residents and travellers faced a traffic jam on the stretch.
Francis Asenso-Boakye, the roads minister, toured the area to assess the situation and later assured the press that the government would construct storm drains to help address the issue.
Richard Kofi Ameko, Head of Drainage at the Ghana Hydrological Authority, also informed the Minister that the Authority has developed a plan to handle the crisis, scheduled to be completed within the next 17 months.
"We've designed a drain size of 6/3, which is currently ongoing. We've also designed a catch pit that will be deeper than the invert of the drain to be constructed.
"We've completed phase one; this is phase two, and it's about a 17-month project," he explained.
Dr. Daniel Sowah, Works Engineer of the Ga South Municipal Assembly, indicated that the Ghana Highway Authority is working on a solution to manage the situation.
"They plan to cut the hill into shapes, apply black soil, and plant grass over it so that when it rains, the silt will not wash away but will come down as water," he added.
