The President of the Full Gospel Church International, Right Reverend Samuel Mensah has urged government to establish security fund to cater for the logistical needs of the security services within the country.
Like the GetFund established to support the educational needs of the country, Rev. Mensah said the security fund will enable the security services like the Ghana Police Service discharge its duties effectively and with efficiency.
He made this known at the annual get together of the Ghana Police Academy popularly known in security circles as “WASSA” in Accra.
He said there has been an instance where the police have been called to crime scenes but due to logistical constraints; they were unable to get to the crime scene in time to ensure peace.
“A police officer if well equipped can represent a police station wherever he finds himself and if any mayhem breaks, before he calls for re-enforcement, he would have brought the situation under control.”
The commandant of the Police Academy, ACP Anderson Fosu –Ackaah in an address said, the Ghana Police Academy in collaboration with the police administration had organized courses for some selected senior police officers in election security and crowd control management for the 2016 elections.
He said, the academy has and will continue to train all senior personnel in their various fields to further equip them to be better personnel.
Giving a brief history of the Academy, he said the academy established in 1959, has trained most of the senior police officers including the Inspector General of Police, Mr David Asante – Apeatu and his management team .
“The academy’s contribution to the development of leaders of the service and by extension its contribution to national peace and security therefore cannot to quantified.”
Giving an instance, he said, the Academy was the joint operational centre for the Greater Accra Regional Command during the year under review.
Adding her voice, Madam Mary Tobbin Osei, a senior consultant of Kanko Associates said there is the need for all Ghanaians to support the service to deliver better.
She said, the service must be supported with logistics and equipments to be able to serve Ghanaians better.
WASSA has been a regular feature in the calendar of the Ghana Police Service and it is an occasion where officers and men of the service gather to wine, dine, interact and share experiences.
The Ghana Police Academy is the second highest police institution after the Ghana Police Command and Staff College- Winneba.
