Unemployed jailed 13 years for stealing

Tarkwa(WR), July 16, GNA - A Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced Thomas Aziz, unemployed on his own plea to 13 years imprisonment for stealing two gas cylinders, a regulator and a hose valued at one million cedis.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector C.K. Mordzo told the court presided over by Mr John Ajet Nassam that the complainant is a civil servant and a trader resident at Layout-Tarkwa while the accused lives at Cyanide-Tarkwa.

He said at dawn on June 17, this year the complainant detected that someone had broken into her kitchen and made away with two gas cylinders, a regulator and a hose, a bag of rice, two gallons of cooking oil, a blender and 10 pieces of bowls but she never reported the matter to the police.

The prosecution said three days later at dawn, a witness rushed to Railway Police station for assistance to arrest the accused suspected to be carrying two gas cylinders in a fertilizer sack on board a Tarkwa-Takoradi bound Metro Mass Transit bus at the station. He said the police together with the witness in an attempt to arrest the accused on the bus managed to escape leaving the items and his travelling bag that were taken to the police station. The prosecution said during the day when the complainant heard about the items at the police station identified one of them with her name written on it.

He said on July 9, the police upon a tip-off arrested the accused and after investigations charged with the offence.
