Ghana Armed Forces mourns soldier killed at Kasoa over land dispute

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the death of a soldier, Lance Corporal Danso Michael, during a land dispute incident at Millennium City, Kasoa.

According to a GAF press statement released on May 1, 2024, the altercation occurred on April 30, 2024, and involved an alleged land guard, Benlord Ababio, who is now in custody.

The dispute over a half-plot of land led to a confrontation at the Millennium City Police Station, where the soldier was fatally shot.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) regret to announce the tragic loss of one of our soldiers in an incident attributed to an alleged land dispute at Millennium City, Kasoa, in the Central Region.

“On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at about 4:20 pm, in an unprovoked circumstance, the soldier was attacked and killed by one Benlord Ababio, an alleged land guard,” the statement read.

The GAF condemned what it termed an unprovoked attack on its personnel and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, in collaboration with the police.

It also expressed its condolences to the family and associates of the deceased.

The GAF further called for calm and urged citizens to resolve land disputes peacefully and lawfully.

“GAF wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends, and loved ones of the deceased soldier, even as we closely collaborate with the police in conducting further investigations. The general public will be duly informed about the outcome of the investigations in due course.

“GAF condemns this unprovoked attack in no uncertain terms. We reiterate our commitment to maintaining law and order in our communities and urge all citizens to seek peaceful and lawful means to resolve land disputes and to refrain from engaging in acts of violence to prevent such tragic incidents,” the statement added.
