Rawlings breaks loose

Fri, 2 Feb 2001 Source: null

The Ghanaian Chronicle says it can reveal that after gracefully bowing out of office 26 days ago ex-President Jerry John Rawlings has engaged in activities which should be a source of worry to the NPP government that is trying to settle down.

He has been making some demands on the Kufuor Administration and visiting some restricted security zones seeking unlimited access to state facilities, which he had hitherto enjoyed. Last weekend, the former President reportedly, dashed to Akosombo and commandeered the executive yacht in which he used to cruise on the Volta Lake for over two hours at the expense of the Ghanaian taxpayer.

Sources told the paper that after the cruise, the ex-President gathered the yacht's maintenance staff and asked them to take good care of the yacht because he would return within the next three months to use it again.

A member of staff who spoke to Chronicle on condition of anonymity said the workers could not refuse the ex-President's request because the yacht is state property and that it could be used by anyone who could afford the rate.

The Chronicle says it has further gathered that Rawlings also went to Burma Camp and demanded to be allowed to fly one of the Ghana Air Force jet fighters, but was however brought to earth when he was told that he would not be allowed.

The former President on another day at the Camp requested to ride on one of the horses in the stable, on which occasion, he was permitted.

A source close to the Kufuor Administration who confirmed these incidents said that members of staff who allowed the former President to use the executive yacht have been reassigned.
