A video showing a member of the Electoral Commission (EC) governing board praying for a peaceful registration process in the ongoing limited registration exercise has gone viral on social media.

The video, shared on Class FM's Twitter handle, features Reverend Akua Ofori Boateng, a board member of the EC, along with other EC officials, praying fervently at a registration centre in Accra.

She was heard praying for the smooth operation of the voter registration exercise, the functionality of the machines, reliable internet connectivity and the well-being of the temporary EC officials involved in the exercise.

The video has elicited mixed reactions on social media, with many criticising the act, while others have expressed scepticism about the effectiveness of prayer in addressing practical issues.

In the meantime, the limited voter registration campaign, which commenced on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, aims to register first-time voters and those seeking to acquire a voter card.

The 21-day initiative is set to conclude on May 27, 2024.

The EC has set a goal to register an estimated 623,000 new voters across the country.

"Registration will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Although we have a target of 623,000, we are open to exceeding this number. Last year, we projected that about 700,000 people would participate in our registration efforts," EC chair Jean Mensa stated.
