President Nana Akufo-Addo has said he has banned the practice where government officials buy cars that are more than two years old.

“These are difficult times for the Ghanaian people. The policy that has worked so far which is running into a lot of problems because of the way it has been abused, which is that officials can buy official cars, that policy will no longer work. No official is going to have the opportunity to buy his official car. So we put an end to it,” Nana Akufo-Addo stated.

This means officials leaving government will not be able to purchase state cars allocated to them as duty vehicles.

The president also told journalists at the Peduase Lodge in the Eastern Region on Monday at a retreat that that policy is effectively cancelled.

He also reiterated the ban his government has placed on the the purchasing of new vehicles by Ministries, Departments and Agencies due to the economic circumstances Ghana finds herself in at the moment.

The retreat, according to Class News' presidential correspondent Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson, focused on the illegal small-scale mining menace (galamsey) and the festering political vigilantism in the country.
