The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah has disclosed that the passing of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) bill into a law will aid in creating 5,000 direct jobs.
A speech read on his behalf by his Deputy, Hon. Bright Wireko-Brobby stated that the OHS law ‘will help transform and harmonize the current uncoordinated and almost chaotic OHS management regime in the country’, thus assisting in the ‘employment of over 5000 people across the country’.
“Once passed, the OHS law will see to the employment of over 5,000 direct jobs across the country. And this is obviously good news for the seemingly high unemployment among our youth who are parading in the corridors of many enterprises seeking for jobs”, the Deputy Minister read.
Hon. Wireko-Brobby also revealed that the OHS bill and policy have been presented to cabinet for approval.
“As part of the Ministry’s efforts to help address this issue, the draft of National Occupation Safety and Health, the OHS policy and bill have been revised and finally submitted to the cabinet for approval”, he said.
He concluded that the Ministry expects the ‘long-awaited OHS policy and the accompanying bill be passed into a law, so as to replace the Factories, Offices and Shops Act (Act 328), which was passed in 1970.
