Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has disclosed that mistrust between labour unions and the government is high.

The simmering tension between the two is what leads to the industrial strike(s) against government despite the assurances to meet the demands of labour unions, Mr Asamoah stated.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, he said the composition of NLC makes it impossible for them to be biased towards any political party in power.

Ofosu Asamoah said, “There is a high level of mistrust between Labour Unions and government. The composition of the NLC makes it nearly impossible to be biased towards any party.”

It will be recalled that in November last year, the Organised Labour proposed a 75% increment in base pay for 2024.

While they began negotiations with the government, it was reported that the Organised Labour settled for a 60% base pay.

The labour union however secured a 23% increment in the base pay for the year 2024 after a two-day negotiation with the government.

The raise is expected to be readjusted upwards with an additional 2% from July 2024 to December 2024.

This will bring the total increase for the year to 25%.
