UK’S Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson has assured that the United Kingdom will maintain its £130m annual aid package to Ghana to enhance the bilateral trade relationship between both countries.
According to Boris Johnson, the decision forms part of the UK’s global vision to spend 9.7% of its GDP on aid.
The United Kingdom government had earlier threatened to cut aid to countries that discriminated against gays. Ghana and Uganda were among a list of countries in Africa with reported cases of abuse of the rights of gay persons.
In 2011, the UK government cut aid worth about £19 million to Malawi after two gay men were sentenced to 14 years in prison with hard labour.
But in an interview with the media during a visit to Ghana on Wednesday, the UK's Foreign Secretary said his government had decided to reverse the earlier decision to sanction Ghana saying Ghana was to benefit from some £130m in aid.
