One person arrested in connection with fatal shooting of soldier at Kasoa - Statement

The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a soldier in Millennium City, Kasoa, located in the Central Region.

According to a statement released on May 1, 2024, the police said the incident occurred on April 30, 2024, at approximately 4:20 pm, when the suspect, identified as Benlord Ababio, allegedly fired shots that critically injured the soldier.

Despite receiving prompt medical attention at the Mother and Child Hospital at Kasoa, the soldier succumbed to his injuries.

“Preliminary Police investigation has established that the suspect, Benlord Ababio, allegedly shot the soldier at Millennium City, Kasoa, on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at about 4:20 pm.

“The victim sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Mother and Child Hospital at Kasoa for medical attention. However, he was later pronounced dead by the medical authorities.

“Suspect Benlord Ababio is currently in custody assisting Police investigation. The leadership of the Police Service is in touch with the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces as the investigation into the incident continues,” the statement continued.

The police has assured the public that they will be kept informed of any developments as the investigation unfolds.

Two other soldiers survived the shooting

Two other soldiers were involved in the incident. They reportedly were in the car during the gun attack but survived.

Their current whereabouts are unknown.

Shot by a sub-chief alleged to be a landguard

According to Adom News, the soldiers were shot at by an alleged landguard, who is also a sub-chief.

The bullet hit the soldier who was driving.

A video circulating on social media shows the officer slumped in his seat with the car in a ditch, presumably after the driver lost control.

The rear glass is shattered, and blood is visible from the head region of the deceased.

The car is left on a deserted road, with the two other officers not in sight.
