Two male nurses have been arrested after they were allegedly caught selling excessive doses of tramadol to young people.

The two accused, in a video shared by @sikaoffical on X, on Wednesday, 15 May 2024, admitted to committing the crime.

They allegedly sold doses of tramadol ranging from 120mg to 250mg, instead of the standard dosage of 50mg.

One claimed he was a staff member at the Kumbungu Hospital while the other said he worked at the Walewale General Hospital.

One of them mentioned he was transporting 120mg to 250mg of tramadol to distribute to pharmacies.

However, a man in the video questioned why he was distributing such doses of the drug when the requirement in Ghana was 50mg.

The nurse conceded that his actions constituted a crime.

Tramadol is a man-made (synthetic) narcotic painkiller and is usually prescribed to patients suffering from moderate to severe pain. Preparations containing Tramadol are classified as Prescription Only Medicines (POM).

The approved dosage strengths for Tramadol, according to the Health Minister, by the FDA, are 50mg and 100 mg.

Tramadol is addictive, acts as stimulant and can produce a feeling of intense euphoria comparable to heroin even at a single dose of 75mg.
