Plans are far advanced to establish folklore clubs in schools across the nation, Acting Director of the National Folklore Board, Nana Adjoa Adobea Asante has disclosed.
According to Nana Adjoa Adobea Asante, the National Folklore Board has engaged the Ghana Mission to UNESCO and individuals who share similar interests on how to establish folklore clubs in primary schools, JHS and SHS nationwide.
This initiative, she asserted, will ensure that the younger generation does not lose their cultural background.
She made this known during an interview with Ghanaweb at the Children’s Fun Folklore Games day on August 21, 2018.
“We are going to open folklore clubs in schools. So we have started talking to a few institutions like the Ghana Mission to UNESCO and also an institution that has already started working on this initiative,” she explained. What we are doing is to let the children identify with their culture. You do not have to sit down and tell them that this is your culture. They need to live it,” she explained.
The Acting Director of the National Folklore Board admonished parents who do not raise their children the Ghanaian way to shun such unpatriotic acts. She charged Ghanaian parents to project their African identity as an indirect way of imprinting the Ghanaian culture on the minds of their children.
The Children’s Fun Folklore Games marked day two of the maiden World Folklore Day celebrations which was launched on Monday, August 20, 2018 at W. E. B. DuBois Centre in Accra.
The event, held at the St. Kizito Catholic School in Nima, featured traditional games such as pilolo, chaskele, oware, tumatu, tug of peace, etc. Selected pupils of the St. Kizito Catholic School and other neighbouring schools partook in a Ga quiz competition.
