Veteran musician, Rex Owusu Marfo otherwise known as Rex Omar has accused politicians of not doing anything significant to advance the course of the creative art industry.
The Ghana Music Rights Organization’s (GHAMRO) chairman, disclosed this in an interview with Mikki Osei Berko on the ‘After Hours’ show.
According to him, partisan politics has over the years adversely affected the development of several sectors of economy.
When asked if the Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture, Honourable Catherine Afeku is on the right path to delivering on government promises, Omar said, “I believe that politicians in this country are toying with creative arts and I mean POLITICIANS. We’ve allowed partisan politics to take away national sense of common. I’m turning it this way so that it doesn’t sound like an insult. I’m saying that we’ve allowed partisan politics to deny us of our national sense of common.
“At the end of the day, take from Independence and show me and look at the infrastructure development in this country and show me a single identifiable something that belongs to creative arts that Ghana invested in. The only creative art place Ghana’s first president invested in was Ghana Films but it has been sold.”
“Politicians always have their way to lie to creative arts personalities that we haven’t been able to prove ourselves but look at the amount Government spends on football.” Rex Omar lamented.
The ‘Abiba’ hit singer bemoaned government’s complete neglect of creative arts.
He however, urged government to separate creative arts from the main ministry so it will also receive equal benefits like other sectors.
“How do you set up Ministry of Tourism, Creative Arts and Culture. Tourism alone is big enough. Some countries are depending on Tourism. So why don’t they set up Ministry of Creative Arts alone.” Rex Omar added.
