Most Ghanaians are excited as they anticipate witnessing a rare natural phenomenon on Sunday, November 3, 2013. The Eclipse of the sun, though a beautiful sight and a wonderful experience, can be very damaging to the health of the eyes. It can result in what is called Eclipse blindness if the proper precautionary measures are not adhered to.
Eclipse blindness, also known as solar retinopathy occurs when bright light of wavelengths that is harmful to the eye from the sun flood the retina. This could result in temporary or permanent damage of the cells that are responsible for vision in the eye. It usually occurs when people look directly at a partial eclipse of the sun without protective eye wear.
Thus, to safely view a solar eclipse, NASA advocates the use of specially designed sun filters. These eye wear will prevent harmful rays from entering the eyes. It is very important to avoid viewing the solar eclipse, especially when it is partial, directly without any protective eye wear.
