Seven (7) deaths out of 19 cases of meningitis have been recorded in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region according to health authorities.

It has been established that most of those who died reported late to the hospital.

Health practitioners advised residents to report to the hospital as soon as they experience neck pains and headache.

They have also asked people to take more fluids and stay in well-ventilated places.

Last week the District Chief Executive (DCE)) Saeed Muazu Jibreal confirmed the outbreak of the disease to mynewsgh.com which had initially resulted in four deaths and said the situation was under control with a rapid response team on standby to contain the situation.

“We recorded deaths and it was serious. We recorded 5 deaths including the old one and nine reported cases that were treated and discharged. Two weeks ago I had an emergency rapid response team to discuss it. Two died in Damongo and the others outside Damongo. After carrying out the education and what not two weeks now we have not recorded any case again”, he revealed.

He indicated that cases were also recorded at Larabanga and Kabalpe but was optimistic that the situation will not recur considering the measures put in place.

But the increasing cases of deaths is sparking anxiety among residents who are calling on health authorities to step up their game in stemming the disease.
