Officials of the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) cut the sod on Thursday, May 16, 2024, for the construction of an ultramodern assembly hall for St. Peter's Senior High School at Kwahu-Nkwatia in the Eastern Region.
The project is the brainchild of the school’s board chairman, Nana Owiredu Wadie I, who is also the Nkosuohene of Kwahu-Nkwatia.
The traditional leader initiated work on the project after discussions with his father, Opanyin Kwame Wadie, and the headmaster of the school, Rev. Father Samuel Erzah Bulu.
Determined to ensure that the project sees the light of day, Nana Owiredu Wadie subsequently wrote to Ghana Gas for sponsorship, with the company responding positively to the call.
The multi-purpose facility, when completed, will have a 3,500-seat capacity, ten washrooms, three offices, pavilions, and other facilities.
Nana Owiredu Wadie, joined by officials of Ghana Gas Company, the management of the school, and traditional leaders, officially cut the sod for the construction of the facility, which is expected to be completed within eight months.
Edomgbole Nwiah Anyimah, the project manager at Ghana Gas Company, stressed in an interview after the sod cutting that undertaking the construction of the facility was in line with the vision of its CEO, Dr. Ben Asante, to ensure that the company gives back to society as part of its corporate social responsibilities.
The assembly hall’s huge capacity, Mr. Anyimah said, makes it the biggest assembly hall project the company has undertaken over the years.
He outlined areas such as education, sports, health, water, and sanitation, and most recently, student scholarships for science students, as the core intervention areas of the organization.
The project manager expressed the preparedness of Ghana Gas Company to continue to execute its corporate social responsibilities across the country and called for collaboration between the company and the local assembly for effective supervision of the St. Peter's project to ensure its success.
Nana Owiredu Wadie I, the board chairman of the school, expressed the appreciation of the board and management of St. Peter's to the gas company for the gesture and called on all stakeholders to emulate the gesture of the organization.
Detailing how the commencement of work began on the facility, Rev. Father Samuel Erzah Bulu, the headmaster of St. Peter's Senior High School, revealed that discussions with the Wadie family resulted in the latter committing initial resources for the project before seeking sponsorship from Ghana Gas.
Appeals for additional infrastructure:
Rev. Father Erzah Bulu appealed to the government to ensure that it provides more infrastructure for the school to enable it to admit more students.
“We hope the attention of the government will be drawn to what is being done here. If the introduction of the free SHS policy is responsible for the current high numbers, then we appeal to the government to provide more infrastructure like classroom blocks, dormitories, etc. If we can get these, we can even increase our enrollment and admit more students,” he said.
He outlined the school's achievements in respective academic fields, such as the National Science and Maths Quiz and Shark Quiz, as well as its overall excellent performances in the WASSCE examination.
