Kotoko at 91: Porcupine warriors renew commitment to excellence
Asante Kotoko Sporting Club is celebrating its 91st anniversary with a renewed commitment to building a stronger future through modern infrastructure, advanced football technology and greater investment in the club.
The Porcupine Warriors, founded on August 31, 1935, in Kumasi, marked the milestone on Monday ,August 31, with a statement.
The club reflected on its rich history and described itself as a symbol of the “indomitable and warrior spirit of the great Asante Kingdom and its allies".
Kotoko highlighted its remarkable record, including 24 Ghana Premier League titles, nine FA Cups, three Super Cups, 16 SWAG Cups and two CAF championships.
The club also celebrated its recent Democracy Cup success, having defeated arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties to claim the competition for the second time.
On the continental stage, Kotoko recalled its historic African triumphs in 1970 and 1983.
The club remains the only Ghanaian side to have won Africa’s premier club championship twice and was subsequently crowned the African Club of the 20th Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
As part of the anniversary message, Kotoko paid tribute to its legendary players, including Baba Yara, Dogo Moro, Osei Kofi, Ibrahim Sunday, Malik Jabir, Robert Mensah, Abdul Razak and Opoku Afriyie.
The club said the achievements of these legends continue to inspire the next generation of players.

“We are more resolved than ever to move into the future with greater fortitude, a sense of purpose and character building,” the statement said.
Kotoko further outlined its ambition to modernise the club, stressing, “We shall pursue development of modern infrastructure and adopt the state-of-the-art technology in football to compete at the highest levels and achieve more laurels for the Porcupine family.”
The Board also expressed gratitude to Life Patron and sole shareholder, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for what it described as “27 years” of unwavering support.
Sponsors, journalists and supporters were also acknowledged for their contributions to the club's development.
Describing the fans as “the blood and lifeline of Asante Kotoko,” the club thanked them for their continued support and urged the entire Kotoko family to remain united.
“We are more now than ever united in heritage and driven by excellence to forge ahead to achieve more laurels for the club,” the statement concluded.
