'Grace Nortey deserves a state-assisted burial' - Arnold Asamoah Baidoo
Entertainment pundit Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has urged the government to accord late veteran actress Grace Nortey a state‑assisted funeral, stating that her immense contribution to Ghana’s creative arts industry deserves national recognition.
Speaking on United Showbiz, Arnold said although a full state burial may not be possible, the government should at least support the family with a state-assisted funeral.
“She actually lived; she projected the industry to that point where she deserves it. Even if they can’t give her a state burial, it should be a state funeral. Whichever way, I am sure the state will be involved,” he said.

He explained that a state-assisted funeral could involve the government providing financial support, a venue, or other resources to help the family with the funeral arrangements.
“In recent times, if the state cannot do a state burial, they give a state-assisted burial. What it means is the government will give certain resources. It could be a venue or other things that will help the family halfway, sometimes it could be a money package. That is what we call state-assisted. They will meet the family and see what they’d do about it. It could be at the State House,” he explained.
Arnold praised Grace Nortey’s legacy, noting that she made significant contributions to the entertainment industry through radio, television and film.
“She has done very well for the industry. I didn’t even know she had done radio. I just read her profile and got to know she started with radio and TV, Thursday Theatre, TV Theatre, Time with NAFTI and, of course, movies. She really played multiple roles in the industry,” he stated.
He also reflected on some of the veteran actress’ memorable on-screen rivalries.
“When you take away her constant banter with Grace Omaboe (Maame Dokono), which we always remember her by, another thing we remember her for, is her banter with Mac Jordan Amartey. Anytime they met in a movie, you knew there would be a clash. She was so feisty,” he recalled.

Arnold further commended the high standard of acting during Grace Nortey’s era, saying many actors spoke impeccable English that enriched Ghanaian cinema.
He concluded by extending his condolences to Grace Nortey’s family, adding that he believes the veteran actress received love and support in her later years and likely did not pass away with bitterness.
