Media personality Nana Frimpong Ziega has defended the government’s efforts in supporting veteran creatives, insisting that authorities have not done as badly as many people claim.
Speaking on United Showbiz, Ziega said the government has been providing financial assistance to some veteran entertainers while they are still alive.
“The government is not doing badly when it comes to supporting veteran creatives. It is not as bad as we say it is,” he said.
According to him, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also supported some veteran creatives during his tenure, while J.A. Adofo recently disclosed that President John Mahama gives him money every month.
“Even for most of them, they get help before they die. Nana Akufo-Addo used to help, and recently J.A. Adofo came out to say that President Mahama gives him money every month. So honestly speaking, they are helping them, so the industry shouldn’t just give up on its own,” he stated.
Ziega further established that government support extends to deceased entertainment legends, adding that veteran highlife musicians Jewel Ackah and Paapa Yankson were both given state-assisted burials.
He also recalled that arrangements were made for a helicopter to transport officials to Nana Kwame Ampadu’s hometown during his funeral, but poor weather prevented the trip.
“When Nana Kwame Ampadu died, I was aware they were going to his hometown with a helicopter, but the weather changed. You can ask Kwesi Agyemang,” he said.
He added that the government had planned a second candlelight vigil for the late Daddy Lumba in Kumasi after the first one in Accra, but the idea was shelved following the fatal helicopter accident that claimed eight lives.
“Daddy Lumba, God rest his soul, the government was about to organise another candlelight vigil in Kumasi after the first one in Accra, but the issue of the eight people who were involved in the helicopter accident happened,” Ziega said.
