Why Captain Kofi Amoabeng was nearly gunned down by a soldier during Rawlings’ era

Retired military officer and founder of the defunct UT Bank, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has recounted an encounter during the early years of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings era in which he says a fellow soldier nearly gunned him down over uncertainty about his political loyalties. Amoabeng made the revelation while reflecting on his years in the Ghana Armed Forces and the difficult political environment that followed the takeover of the country by Flt. Lt. Some junior military officers were taking advantage of the situation and people could easily become targets simply because their loyalties were questioned. So, I chose to lay low, resign and keep my intentions to myself. “In my book, UT Story, Humble Beginnings, I recount an encounter where a fellow military man almost gunned me down simply because he was unsure of where I stood. “That period taught me a lesson I have carried throughout my life: Adapting to your environment does not necessarily mean abandoning your principles,” part of the post said.
