'I teach from P1 to JHS3 for GH¢750 a month' – Accra teacher shares ordeal
A Ghanaian Language teacher has shared the difficulties she faces working at a private school in Accra, where she teaches pupils from Primary One (P1) to Junior High School Three (JHS3) for a monthly salary of GH¢750.
In a video posted by Starr FM, the teacher said she is the only person handling Ghanaian Language classes across all those levels despite the workload.
She said the salary is not enough to meet her basic needs, especially as she has to pay for transport and rent while living alone in Accra.
“I’m a teacher, and at the same time, I’m also going to school, and talking about our salary, it’s really bad. I’m actually a Ghanaian Language teacher. I’m currently teaching kids where I’m working, and I’m teaching from Class 1 to Form 3,” she said.
“Only me, and then at the end of the month, I’m only given GH¢750. As I’m talking to you right now, the Form 3 students who completed did so well this year, and at least I’m hoping that maybe when school resumes, they’ll do something about my salary because it’s really bad,” she continued.
The teacher explained that her financial situation has become difficult because she has to commute to school every day and also pay rent.
“I have to join a car every morning to get to school, and I’m renting. My parents are not here. I’m alone here in Accra and surviving, you know, if all these things are going on…” she disclosed.
She also spoke about the pressure some women face when they need financial assistance, saying some people expect sexual favours in exchange for money.
“With ladies too, we find other means because now, before you ask someone for money, the person wants to do something with you before they give you,” she stated.
She said the small study fees she receives at the end of each week sometimes help her manage her expenses.
“What helps sometimes is that at the end of the week, we are given some study fees like GH¢100,” she added.
