Dear GhanaWeb: A 45-year-old mother of four is pregnant for me
Dear GhanaWeb,
I am only 24 years old, still in university and completely dependent on my parents, but somehow, I have found myself in a situation I never imagined I would be in.
A 45-year-old woman is pregnant for me, and she has decided she will keep the baby.
The woman sells breakfast foods such as oats, tombrown and rice water around where I live. That was how we initially became friends. I would go there to buy breakfast, and because she was very friendly, we started talking a lot.
Interestingly, I became close to her family before I ever became close to her. She has four children, and I know all of them. Her oldest child is about 22 years old and was actually my junior in school. I used to help her with her assignments when we were in school. Her youngest is only about five years old.
I was actually in love with her oldest daughter, but I was too shy to tell her how I felt, so we remained friends.
Through her, I became close to her mother and the other children. Her mother was always kind to me. Sometimes she would even give me free breakfast. After SHS, I started visiting their house regularly, and I helped the children with their schoolwork whenever I could.
When I entered university, the woman continued checking on me. She would call to ask how school was going and whether I was doing well.
I don’t even know how she managed to convince me to start sleeping with her, but it happened. It started in 2024 when I was 22 years old.
Now, two years later, she says she is pregnant for me. She has told me that because of her beliefs and where she comes from, she will not consider abortion. She intends to have the baby.
The biggest problem is that she is already struggling. She is a single mother with four children to take care of, and from what I see, she sometimes struggles to provide even the basic things for herself and the children.
She keeps telling me that she won’t worry me and that I shouldn’t think too much about the pregnancy. But every now and then, she will send me a message saying she needs money for food, hospital bills or something else.
The truth is that I feel completely overwhelmed. I am also a struggling student. I don’t have a job or a stable income. My parents still give me money for virtually everything I need. So how am I supposed to suddenly become responsible for a child?
And beyond the financial pressure, I feel ashamed of the situation. She is 45 and I am 24. Sometimes I cannot even understand how I allowed myself to get into this position.
Whenever I try to have a serious conversation with her about what we are going to do, she tells me not to worry because she doesn’t want to burden me.
But I already feel burdened. I honestly don’t know how I am supposed to handle this when I am barely managing my own life. What do I do now?
