NDC needs strong leadership to succeed Mahama in 2028 – Agbey
An operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Agbey, has called on potential presidential aspirants within the party to openly declare their intentions ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
According to him, the party needs to begin preparations early to ensure a smooth transition and avoid tensions during the eventual presidential nomination process.
In a public statement issued on Monday, September 7, 2026, Agbey said President John Dramani Mahama’s indication that he would not seek a third term should encourage potential successors to begin making their cases to party members and the wider public.
“Mahama says he's done and has no interest in pursuing any third-term presidency,” he said.
Agbey argued that potential successors should not wait until the last minute to enter the contest, warning that a delayed nomination process could create unnecessary tensions within the party.
“I am by this public statement calling on potential presidential candidates to come out and declare their interest for the masses to assess their political credit worthiness,” he said.
He said the NDC would need a candidate capable of building on the gains of the Mahama administration and maintaining the party’s support ahead of the 2028 elections.

“The NDC must maintain its tradition of showing up with bold and competent leadership,” Agbey said.
He further called for a candidate who would uphold the principles of the NDC while engaging Ghanaians in a constructive and inclusive manner.
“It is all about a leader who really has NDC principles, and is ready and willing to adopt a conversational tone with resilience and confidence to even those outside the political bubble,” he said.
Agbey also cautioned the party against selecting a candidate based primarily on populist messaging, stressing the need for competence, credibility and a clear policy direction.
He said the next flagbearer should be prepared to consolidate the gains made under the Mahama administration and provide leadership capable of addressing the challenges ahead.
His comments come as attention within the NDC increasingly turns to the party’s succession plans ahead of the 2028 general election.
