Dear GhanaWeb: I raised two children for 10 years only to discover neither is mine
Dear GhanaWeb,
Ten years ago, my wife came home with a little girl who was about five years old and told me she had adopted her out of pity.
She sounded so confident and convincing when explaining why she had brought the child home without going through the proper adoption process.
She assured me that the girl's parents would never come looking for her. She never told me who the girl's real parents were.
All she said was that she had met a street vendor who wanted to abandon her child because she could no longer take care of her, and something in her spirit immediately told her to take the girl in.
I had so many questions, but at some point, she started crying. We had been married for two years without a child at the time, and she made me feel as though questioning her decision meant I was accusing her of being desperate to have a child. I eventually let it go, and we raised the little girl together.
Two years later, my wife became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. It took us four years to have that child, so I cherished her deeply.
I believed she was my biological daughter, and I loved both girls equally because I considered them my children.
Recently, however, everything I believed about my family came crashing down. My wife started having serious arguments with an anonymous person over the phone.
She would make calls in secret, go somewhere far away so I wouldn't hear her conversations, and return visibly upset.
Whenever I asked what was happening, she would simply tell me it was a family matter and that she would explain everything to me later.
Unfortunately, the person eventually showed up at our home. He was an ordinary-looking man, and he came with one demand. He said he wanted to claim his children. I was confused until he revealed who the children were. Both girls. That was when I discovered that my wife had lied to me about everything.
The first girl I thought my wife had adopted was actually her biological daughter.
She had given birth to her before we met but deliberately hid the truth from me. From what I later learned, she only decided to bring the girl into my life after the child's family started insisting that she tell me the truth.
Instead of telling me that the child was hers, she created the adoption story.
But the second revelation hurt me even more. The daughter I had always believed was mine was also the man's biological child.
I had struggled with low sperm count, and apparently, my wife knew about it. Instead of being honest with me, she became pregnant by the same man who was the father of her first child and allowed me to believe for years that I was the girl's biological father.
My wife has now left with the children, and I feel completely empty.
What hurts most is not only the betrayal. I miss the girls terribly. I raised them, provided for them, watched them grow, and built my entire life around them.
Regardless of their biological father, they were my children in every way that mattered to me.
Now I'm sitting alone, wondering what my life means after discovering that I was never the biological father I thought I was. I also keep thinking about my low sperm count. If I had known that I was still struggling with it, perhaps I would have taken steps to have children instead of assuming I had finally become a father. Now I feel like I wasted years believing I had the family I always wanted.
The hardest part is wondering whether my wife ever truly loved me or whether she married me because of the comfort, money, and security I could provide.
I don't know what hurts more: losing my wife, losing the two children I raised, or discovering that the family I thought was mine was built on lies.
After ten years of loving and raising these children as my own, how am I supposed to simply accept that they were never mine? What do I do now?
