Kpebu reacts to attempted arrest of Salomey Baffoe’s lawyer at court premises
Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has described the attempted arrest of NPP MP and lawyer for Salomey Baffoe, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, by alleged security operatives within the court premises as a setback to Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking to the media after the confrontation, Kpebu said the security operatives should have followed the constitutional and parliamentary procedures for dealing with a sitting MP.

He said under the Parliament Act 300 and the Constitution, authorities should first engage the Speaker of Parliament when they need an MP for questioning over an alleged offence.
“It's a retrogression in our quest for a better democracy. It's a retrogression. So, as far as I'm aware, by the Parliament Act 300 and then the constitutional architecture, when you need a Parliamentarian, whether he's on suspicion of having committed an offense, my understanding so far is that you would write to the Speaker of Parliament, then the Speaker would make arrangements to talk to the MP.
“Then you'll find a suitable time, then the MP avails himself… to avoid a situation where a ruling government will try to use the police and other security agencies to clamp down on vociferous opposition MPs,” he said.
He warned that political parties in government should be mindful of how they use state security agencies against opposition lawmakers, noting that no political party remains in power forever.
“This is our democracy. No party can stay in office forever so the tables will always turn. When officialdom is doing these things, they should be careful, very, very careful,” he said.
Kpebu said the current situation was similar to events under the previous administration that contributed to its defeat and urged the NDC not to repeat such actions.
“It was just yesterday we drove out Akufo-Addo and the NPP because of such matters, and NDC comes, and they are repeating the same. They should know how Ghanaians will react,” he added.
Videos sighted by GhanaWeb during the attempted arrest showed the EOCO officer seen standing in front of the driver's door of the MP's vehicle, asking him to follow her to the EOCO office.
The NPP MP, who looked enraged, asked her what showed she was an officer of EOCO and why they were looking for him.
He claimed that his attempted arrest was because he was representing his client in the Ghana Jollof case.
He told the woman to move from the front door of his car, but she refused, which caused him to push her.

The woman fought back, insisting that the MP was needed at EOCO.
One of the lawyers who was with Nana Agyei Baffour is heard saying that EOCO should write to the Speaker of Parliament if they indeed want to arrest the MP because there is a procedure for that.
It is not clear why EOCO was attempting to take custody of the MP, but he had earlier claimed that there was a cocaine manufacturing plant in Ghana.
