High 5G and licence fees could keep data prices high - Abed-Nego Bandim
Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Information and Communications, Abed-Nego Bandim, has cautioned that high fees for telecom spectrum and licences could ultimately push up the cost of data for consumers.
He argued that telecom operators already face significant taxes and other charges, while also having to pay large amounts to acquire the frequencies and licences needed to provide their services.
According to him, the government must be careful not to price 5G spectrum at an excessively high rate because operators could pass those costs on to consumers.

“When they buy it high, they will sell it high. Do you agree with me? That is why data, our people cannot afford data,” he said during the 28th Forum held by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications on September 23, 2026.
The legislator also questioned whether the funds allocated for digital and related telecommunications initiatives in the year would be enough to support the comprehensive development of the sector.
He said Parliament would have to use its oversight role to ensure that funds allocated to telecommunications and digital infrastructure are properly released and used for their intended purposes.

He further called for a broader review of the costs facing telecom operators, noting that taxation is only one part of the financial burden on the industry.
His comments come amid discussions about how Ghana can reform its telecommunications tax system while ensuring that operators have enough room to invest in network expansion, new technologies and improved services.
