Ghanaian gospel musician Florence has officially dropped the surname of her former husband, Bishop Daniel Obinim, from her stage name following the traditional dissolution of their marriage.
The gospel musician, who had been widely known as Florence Obinim for several years in the music industry, has now rebranded as Queen Florence the Lioness.
Florence confirmed the new stage name to blogger Tina News on September 23, 2026.
“Now my music name is Queen Florence the Lioness,” she said.
The name change follows the traditional dissolution of her over two decades of marriage to Bishop Daniel Obinim, also known as Angel Obinim, and his public request for her to stop using his surname.
The separation gained public attention in September 2026 after traditional marriage rites, including the return of the “Tiri Nsa”, were reportedly performed.
'If Bishop asks me to drop his surname, I will' - Florence Obinim
Following the development, Bishop Obinim publicly asked Florence to remove his family name from her name, saying they were no longer together after he had accepted the drink presented to signify the dissolution of their marriage.
The disagreements between the leader of the International God’s Way Church and his former wife took another turn earlier in September after an audio recording of the preacher surfaced online.
In the audio, sighted by GhanaWeb on September 14, 2026, Bishop Obinim made several strong statements about their just-ended marriage and directly addressed Florence’s continued use of his surname.
While making the statements, he said Florence had publicly embarrassed him and also since he had accepted the drink she presented to signify the divorce, she should also remove his surname, “Obinim”, from her name.
“You have embarrassed me, and I emphasise that when I die, don’t come to my funeral as a widow. Since I have accepted the drink, remove the name Obinim from your name,” he declared.
