Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has expressed that he does not make music with the aim of winning awards, explaining that his priority has always been making money since award schemes benefit organisers more than the artistes they honor.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Shatta Wale responded to a netizen who questioned whether he is more interested in money than building an award‑winning legacy for younger musicians.
He argued that award organisers are businesspeople who capitalize on artistes’ popularity to generate revenue.
“The people who organise the awards are businessmen and they know how to use numbers to generate money,” he said.
According to him, organisers secure sponsorships and rely on artistes with massive fan bases to sell tickets and maximize profits.
“As a POP designer, imagine you become so rich that you organise the Ghana POP Awards. Do you know you can do that?” he asked, explaining that anyone with the resources could establish an award scheme.
Shatta Wale also questioned the significance people attach to awards, asking whether music legends such as Michael Jackson and Angélique Kidjo had ever organised award ceremonies themselves.
He maintained that while award organisers earn substantial income from sponsorships and ticket sales, the artistes who draw the crowds receive very little in comparison.
“At the end of the day, they make the money, keep it for themselves and give the artiste a piece of wood,” he remarked.
