36 Meetings, 94 Goals, Two AFCON Finals: Ghana vs Côte d'Ivoire in numbers
Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire have built one of West Africa’s most competitive football rivalries, with Thursday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Bouaké set to add another chapter to their long history.
The two nations have met 36 times, with Ghana holding a narrow advantage in the overall record.
The Black Stars have won 13 of those encounters, while Côte d’Ivoire have recorded 12 victories, with the remaining 11 matches ending in draws.
Ghana have also scored 50 goals across the meetings, compared to 44 for the Elephants.
But beyond the numbers, the rivalry has produced some of African football’s most dramatic encounters.
Bouaké brings back painful Ghana memories
Thursday’s venue carries its own uncomfortable history for Ghanaian football.
Bouaké was the setting for the 1984 AFCON, a tournament that became one of the darkest chapters in the Black Stars’ continental history.

Ghana entered the competition as defending champions and four-time winners, but their campaign unravelled in Bouaké.
The Black Stars lost 2-1 to Nigeria in their opening match before suffering another defeat, this time a 2-0 loss to Algeria.
A 1-0 victory over Malawi in their final group game was not enough to save their campaign.
Ghana finished third in the group and failed to reach the semi-finals. The disappointing campaign became known in Ghanaian football folklore as the “Bouaké Debacle.”
More than four decades later, the Black Stars return to the same city.
Two AFCON finals, two shootout defeats
The rivalry has also produced two AFCON finals, and Côte d’Ivoire won both.
In 1992, the final ended 0-0 after extra time before Côte d’Ivoire won 11-10 on penalties.
The same drama unfolded in the 2015 final. Again, neither team scored in 120 minutes, with the Elephants eventually winning 9-8 on penalties.
A rivalry that has swung both ways
Outside the finals, however, the head-to-head record has produced victories for both sides across different generations.
Ghana recorded one of their biggest wins over the Elephants in the 1965 AFCON, beating Côte d’Ivoire 4-1.
The Black Stars also produced a memorable 2-0 victory in the 1996 AFCON before securing another major tournament win over their neighbours with a 4-2 victory at the 2008 AFCON in Accra.
Côte d’Ivoire responded in the 2000 AFCON, winning 2-0, before claiming a 3-1 victory over Ghana at the 2010 tournament in Angola.
Their most recent meeting was a 0-0 friendly in Cape Coast in June 2021.
