There was drama at Sewua as National Security operatives arrested some suspects allegedly involved in illegal sand-winning activities along the Accra-Kumasi Expressway construction site.
The suspects were reportedly extracting sand from sections of the road, allegedly damaging work already completed on the major infrastructure project.
The operation followed the circulation of videos showing the illegal activities on social media. The videos, shared by social media activist Amaro Shakur, reportedly prompted National Security operatives to move into the community to apprehend those involved.
Footage of the operation showed tipper trucks allegedly used for the sand-winning activities parked by the roadside as security personnel moved in to make arrests.
Some of the suspects reportedly attempted to flee upon encountering the operatives, triggering a dramatic chase. The footage showed security personnel firing warning shots as they pursued one of the suspects in a vehicle.
One of the suspects was eventually apprehended after a chase involving the security operatives.
The leader of the operation said the suspects would undergo screening to establish those allegedly responsible for the illegal activities.
Following the initial screening, some of the suspects were placed in a vehicle for transportation to Accra for further investigations.
