Dear GhanaWeb: I’m pregnant for my best friend’s boyfriend after secret affair
Dear GhanaWeb,
My best friend and I have known each other since senior high school. We have been very close over the years and have always supported each other whenever either of us needed help.
She lives with her boyfriend, and because they both contributed to renting their apartment, they have been staying together for some time.
Last year, I started having accommodation problems, so I reached out to her for help. She spoke to her boyfriend, and they both agreed that I could move in with them. They gave me a room in their spacious apartment, and I have been living with them since November last year.
Everything was fine initially until January this year, when her boyfriend started behaving strangely towards me. Whenever my friend was not around, he would come to my room to chat, touch me unnecessarily and sometimes ask us to eat together.
At first, I didn't think much of it because I considered him my friend's partner and someone I was supposed to respect. However, things eventually took a different turn.
One day, he came into my room while I was getting dressed to go out. He was having a conversation with me, then he started kissing and touching me inappropriately. I asked him to stop, but he did not listen. Before I knew what was happening, things had gone further than I ever imagined.
He eventually carried me to the bed, and we had sex that day. I felt overwhelmed by what had happened, but instead of ending there, it became the beginning of something I never thought I would experience with my best friend's boyfriend.
We started sleeping together regularly whenever my friend was away. Gradually, we became so comfortable with each other that we practically lived like a couple whenever she was not home. We ate together, spent time together, flirted and made sure to create opportunities to have sex.
The sexual relationship has been going on since January, and I have developed strong feelings for him. His sexual performance is something I enjoy, and I have become emotionally attached to him. I have even stopped dating my own boyfriend because of what is happening between us.
The most shocking part is how well we have managed to hide everything from my best friend. Whenever she is around, we pretend not to like each other and behave as though there is nothing going on between us. We are careful not to do anything that could make her suspect that her boyfriend and I are having an affair.
Recently, however, everything became more complicated when I discovered that I was pregnant. I informed him, hoping we would sit down and discuss what to do next. Unfortunately, his reaction was not what I expected. He immediately asked me to abort the pregnancy. According to him, keeping the baby would destroy my friendship with my best friend and also affect his relationship with her.
I told him I was not comfortable with the idea of having another abortion because I have already terminated two pregnancies in the past. I honestly do not think I am ready to go through that experience again.
I thought that after everything we had shared over the past months, he would at least consider leaving my friend so we could build something together. He keeps insisting that I should abort the pregnancy because of the damage it could cause to his relationship and my friendship. I am beginning to wonder whether I have been deceiving myself all this while by thinking that he loves me as much as I love him.
I know I have betrayed someone who trusted me, and I cannot imagine the pain she would feel if she discovered what has been happening under her roof. She welcomed me into her home when I had nowhere comfortable to stay, and this is how I have repaid her kindness.
Should I keep the pregnancy and accept whatever consequences come with it, or should I consider his request and terminate it to protect my friendship and avoid destroying their relationship? And how do I even face my best friend when the truth eventually comes out? I honestly need advice.
