Philadelphia, PA -- The African-American Museum in Philadelphia recently celebrated an all day
Ghana festival on Saturday, May 5th.
African-American Museum for the second year in a row cast a public spotlight
on the brilliance of one African country. In 2007, Ghana got the spotlight
it deserves. This was on the occasion the country South of the Sahara is
celebrating its 50 years of independence.
The highlight of the celebration were the honoring of; the Ga Manye; Her
Majesty Naa Dedei Omaadru, III (Queen of the Ga State) and Professor Felix
Konotey-Ahulu, Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Walker and Nana Korantema Ayeboafo who have
contributed enormously to the betterment of Ghana and a parade from 7th &
Walnut Streets to the museum which included;
Parade of Flags (Representing the Continent of Africa and rest of the world)
Ghanaian Drum Float
Highlife Float
Ghanaian Contingent (People of Ghana representing a variety of regions and
families, along with African Americans marching in harmony
Her majesty was driven in a Rolls Royce and behind a huge Ghanaian flag and
many flags representing various countries of the world.
Following the parade, there was a short ceremony to award the honorees and
also a Ghana Day proclamation making every May 5th, Ghana Day in the State
of Pennsylvia.
There were also various activities such as a traditional naming ceremony
where participants choose an african name to be christened, African/African
American Solidarity, African Market Place, Traditional Craft Exhibition,
Royal Talking Drum Workshop, African Dance Workshop, African Bead Workshop
and African Films.
Kudos to Dr. Samuel Quartey, the chairman, members of the celebration's
planning meeting and the African American Museum for creating a platform to
get everyone connected to Africa.
The celebration torch was passed on to Ethopia as the selected African
country to get the spotlight next year. Congratulations.
