The main issue is how the money was spent – Kpebu on GoldBod losses

Legal practitioner and policy analyst Martin Luther Kpebu has described the extortion allegation against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin as “not a big deal.”

Kpebu said the main issue should be whether public funds used for gold purchases were spent properly and for the benefit of Ghanaians.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Monday, August 25, 2026, he said the money should be explained as having been used for a clear economic purpose rather than being considered lost.

“This matter, I really don’t see it as any big deal. Where we should focus is trying to explain that the money was well spent, instead of it being seen as lost,” he stated.

He said some policy analysts believe the funds were used to help stabilise the cedi and keep inflation low, which could help reduce the prices of goods and services.

“The money was used to achieve a certain purpose: to stabilise the cedi so that inflation would be kept low so prices of goods and services would be lower,” he added.

Kpebu’s comments come after Afenyo-Markin filed a lawsuit against Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi and others over claims describing him as an extortionist.

The Effutu MP announced the lawsuit in Parliament on Monday, August 24.
